Measures

The metrics that made you successful in your previous role were designed for that context. Applied to a new one, they make real progress invisible.

Key question

What does meaningful progress look like in my new context? Have I designed measures that make my advancement visible?

At a glance

Senior transitions demand new scorecards.

Senior transitions break feedback loops. The signals that used to tell you this is working stop arriving, or arrive too late. Building new ones, calibrated to this stage, is not an optional extra. It is how you navigate without losing your bearings.

It's a misinterpretation of progress

Early-stage experimentation and relationship-building are legitimate value creation. They just don't appear on old scorecards.

New context, new measures

The transition window demands lead indicators: trust built, agenda shaped, strategic clarity established. These rarely appear on traditional scorecards, but they matter just as much in year one.

Why it happens

Leaders rarely set wrong targets. What they do is apply the wrong categories of measurement — ones optimised for a previous context, that make genuine progress in the new one invisible.

The work of Measures is threefold: identify what progress looks like in your new context; design measures that make your advancement visible; and genuinely value these new indicators as accurate reflections of value creation.

Julia's story — Entrepreneurial transition

After two decades measuring success through scale and operational efficiency, Julia launched her own firm. The first six months felt like failure. She was applying enterprise metrics to an early-stage context. When she redefined progress as hypothesis validation and client relationship depth, momentum became visible.

Self-assessment

I can articulate 3 to 5 indicators of success specific to my new context.

I have defined an appropriate time horizon for my transition (18 to 24 months).

I regularly acknowledge early-stage progress as genuine value creation.

When I feel stuck, I check my measurement framework before concluding I am failing.
